Shoe size: How we calculate

How we calculate

By foot length, we select the smallest published reference at least as long as the entered value. Rieker uses published ranges. We do not extrapolate outside a chart. With a known size, we use the selected brand’s row and compare published foot lengths where available; this is approximate, not a universal conversion.

PEPCO publishes insole length, not foot length. Enter the length of an insole that fits; other brands are not compared using it.

How to measure

Stand with both feet on paper, wearing the socks intended for the shoes. Measure from heel to the longest toe and use the longer foot. Measuring in the evening is preferable. Do not confuse foot length with insole length.

Try hiking shoes with hiking socks: toes should not touch the front on descents and the heel should not slip excessively. The calculator does not add an arbitrary allowance to the brand chart.

Limitations

Merrell’s adult chart converts labels; its JPN centimetres are not treated as measured foot length. For a known Rieker label, we show its range without inferring actual foot length.

Children’s charts and ranges differ between brands. Unavailable groups and sizes are stated explicitly. PEPCO double sizes are excluded.

Identical EU, UK or US labels do not guarantee identical fit across brands. General ISO conversion is available through the “General size chart” in the same form and does not replace brand charts.

For Salamander we use the foot-length column. Allowance is already reflected in the separate shoe-length column and is not added again. Skechers uses its official label conversion; centimetres on a label do not replace a foot measurement.

Nike includes baby sizes from EU 16. Overlapping sizes use the baby chart’s measurements. For EU 27.5–31.5, foot length is converted from the published inch column: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, rounded to 0.1 cm. The younger-child chart’s centimetre column differs from its inch column; CM/JP labels are not used as measurements. The Skechers children’s chart comes from its Estonian site; CM is a label, not a verified foot length. Children’s Rieker, Merrell and Salamander charts are currently unavailable.

Sizes are a guide. Width, last and the specific model affect fit; check the product chart and try shoes before buying.

How we calculate

ISO 19407:2023 relates EU, UK, US and Mondopoint to foot length; rounding depends on the starting system. Men’s and women’s US markings differ, while EU, UK and Mondopoint are shared in the standard. AU/UK and AUS/US are distinct retail scales, not a size range: Blundstone uses AU/UK, while City Beach uses AUS/US for women. Mexico here is only an approximate centimetre-based local marking, not a universal standard. Inches = millimetres / 25.4. Check the brand chart and fit.

India, Thailand, Malaysia and Arab countries do not form one common shoe-size scale. The checked retailer charts from India, Thailand, Malaysia and the UAE use UK, EU, US and/or length markings. Select the system printed on the shoe or brand chart, not the country of sale.
