Acceleration, time and speed: Explanation and example

Find final velocity and displacement from initial velocity, acceleration and time.

Explanation and example

For constant acceleration along one axis, v = v₀ + at and displacement s = v₀t + at²/2. Velocity uses m/s, acceleration m/s² and time seconds. A negative result means motion or displacement opposite to the chosen positive direction.

Example: v₀ = 2 m/s, a = 3 m/s² and t = 4 s give final velocity 14 m/s and displacement 32 m. The average velocity (2 + 14)/2 = 8 m/s confirms 8 × 4 = 32 m.

Limits

Acceleration must remain constant during the interval. Displacement is not always total distance travelled: the two differ after a direction reversal. Air resistance and forces that change over time are outside this model.
