Time, distance and speed: Explanation and example
Find distance, speed or time from the other two quantities.
Explanation and example
For constant speed, distance equals speed times time: s = v × t. Leave the quantity you want to find blank and enter the other two. The fields use metres, metres per second and seconds. Convert other units before entering a value.
Example: travelling at 12 m/s for 30 seconds covers 360 metres. Covering the same 360 metres at 10 m/s takes 36 seconds. Substituting the answer back into s = v × t checks either calculation.
Limits
The model assumes speed remains constant throughout the interval. Stops, acceleration and changes of direction need a different model. A zero distance over zero time cannot determine a unique speed.
