VAT: How we calculate
Add VAT or extract it from a VAT-inclusive amount.
How we calculate
From a VAT-exclusive amount: tax = base × rate in percent / 100. From a VAT-inclusive amount: base = total × 100 / (100 + rate in percent), tax = total − base.
Quick buttons show common standard rates in selected countries. Enter any other rate manually; the calculator does not determine its legal applicability.
Worked example
A €100 base at 24% gives tax of 100 × 24 / 100 = €24 and a €124 total. Starting from a VAT-inclusive €124, base = 124 × 100 / 124 = €100 and tax = €24. Tax is not 24% of the VAT-inclusive total.
