Pregnancy weight gain: How we calculate

How we calculate

We calculate pre-pregnancy BMI and select the CDC total-pregnancy range for one baby or twins. For the table used here, we support BMI below 40; this calculator does not return a range for BMI 40 or above.

This is a range for the entire pregnancy, not a weekly target. Discuss your personal situation with a midwife or clinician.

Worked example

Pre-pregnancy weight of 60 kg and height of 170 cm give BMI ≈ 20.76. For one baby, the table used here gives a total pregnancy weight-gain range of 11.3–15.9 kg. This is not a weekly target or a personal care plan; discuss an individual recommendation with a healthcare professional.
