Fractions: Explanation and example

Add, subtract, multiply, divide and convert ordinary fractions.

Explanation and example

A fraction has a numerator and a nonzero denominator. Arithmetic uses integer numerators and denominators, then reduces the result by their greatest common divisor. To express a fraction as a percentage, multiply its value by 100. A decimal is an approximation when the expansion does not terminate.

Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The fraction 1/8 is 0.125, or 12.5%. The improper fraction 7/3 can be shown as 2 and 1/3.

Limits

Division by zero is undefined. Entered values must be safe JavaScript integers, while the exact result is retained as a reduced fraction. Signed remainders are shown explicitly for negative mixed numbers.
